Nutley Police Department Coffee with a Cop at Kingsland Manor

December 13, 2017

Program offers opportunity to meet local officers, discuss community issues

Public Safety Director Alphonse Petracco, Chief Thomas Strumolo and the Nutley Police Department will be hosting “Coffee with a Cop” on Wednesday, December 13, 2017.  Nutley police officers and community members will come together in an informal, neutral space to discuss community issues, build relationships, and drink coffee.

All community members are invited to attend. The event begins at 9:30 am at The Kingsland Manor located at 3 Kingsland Street in Nutley. Please contact Detective Thomas Perrota with questions at 973-284-4940 x2125 or

Coffee with a Cop provides a unique opportunity for community members to ask questions and learn more about the department’s work in Nutley’s neighborhoods.

The majority of contacts law enforcement has with the public happen during emergencies, or emotional situations. Those situations are not always the most effective times for relationship building with the community, and some community members may feel that officers are unapproachable on the street. Coffee with a Cop breaks down barriers and allows for a relaxed, one-on-one interaction.

“We hope that community members will feel comfortable to ask questions, bring concerns, or simply get to know our officers,” said Chief Strumolo. “These interactions are the foundation of community partnerships.”

Coffee with a Cop is a national initiative supported by The United States Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services. Similar events are being held across the country, as local police departments strive to make lasting connections with the communities they serve.

The program aims to advance the practice of community policing through improving relationships between police officers and community members one cup of coffee at a time.

McGinnity Kin Visit Kingsland Manor

In 1918, the McGinnity family purchased the Kingsland Manor home. Daniel McGinnity, a famous fight promoter and entertainment entrepreneur, used Nutley as a training camp for his prize fighters.

It was Bernard “Bus” McGinnity, Daniel’s son who ran a speak-easy in the basement of the Kingsland Manor during Prohibition. After Prohibition was repealed, he and his mother, Katherine, ran it as the Colonial Club until their liquor license was revoked. Then the Manor became known as the Nutley Private Hospital, as the McGinnity family operated a convalescent home.

Lorraine McGinnity Darney, the daughter of 'Bus' McGinnity and Lulu Hartman McGinnity, recently visited the Kingsland Manor with her daughter, Lora Paxton, her daughter-in-law, Chris Darney and her grandson, John Paxton.

Lulu and Bus separated when Lorraine was about two years old. She didn't have many memories to share and nothing about the Speakeasy or the Colonial Club. She did remember that the McGinnity's were animal lovers, raised dogs for sale, her mom (Lulu) was a college graduate and a teacher in the Newark School system and that she spent summers with her grandparents, Bill and Johanna Hartmann, in Rockland Lake, N.Y.
